Ok well Tosh.O hasn’t been the greatest this season. I don’t know , maybe people are not putting enough stupid stuff up on the web or … who knows, but one thing that Tosh.O is always good for is finding out about videos you would never otherwise have known about like this one… “My Vagina Ain’t Handicapped”. Of course, the one group of people one should never make fun of is our handicapped friends , but it just goes to show you that not only do they have a sense of humor, but they need to get laid too, dammit.

The best songs on the new Lady Gaga album rate in at about a 7 out of 10 in (or 3 1/2 stars in itunes ratings) the rest is really crud. Looking at the songs in waveform they all have the exact same structure… a long stupid speaking intro and then this rushed wanna be dance track feel to them with no inspiration and lyrics that have no real meaning. The BPM range on the songs is about the same for all of them too. If a dope like Britney can put out better albums than this at the lowest point in her career … I think Lady Gaga needs to start firing bitches or something.

Watching the progression of Lady Gaga’s music has made me believe that this is no personal attack on my part. I am sure she is a very talented artist who’s every move is dictated by marketing executives who have shaped her image , music and every step to maximize profits. Until now they have done very well with their product (even though I am sure “Born This Way” will make them a lot of money at least to begin with, but I think that will be from the afterglow of her former product.)

As a DJ (or at least this is the case with my style of playing) one must analyze music to see how it works with other music to present it (play it) in a way that makes sense and ideally tells a story or sets a vibe that everyone can relate to on some level. Upon analysis one can easily see devices artist use for songs and certain stylistic elements that an artist might use for artistic or marketing reasons. I would say probably one of the smartest musical groups in this sense is “The Black Eyed Peas”. Their songs are structured in such a way where they can be played as a stand alone song or mixed on the dance floor easily. Their songs often have a creative ending that allows a DJ to change up the the whole program or switch to another genre easily. Given that they understand this and use it to their advantage they get a lot of play from DJs ( at least from this one ). Their songs often contain some personal element or tell some kind of story even if it is just a silly story ( Lady Lumps for example).

We loved the Lady Gaga stories. Like “Poker Face” .. all about the oral sex – “Poke her face” with the back ground lyrics ma ma mamar (mamar spanish for to suck) Bad Romance – who can’t relate to that ? Just Dance … Telephone (stupid song but terrific video to back it up) and the list goes on. Sure she has copied the hell out of Madonna but it wasn’t something we minded because we didn’t mind visiting Madonna again.

But now what ? There does seem to be a trend toward a kind of european style tech house sound that the Black Eyed Peas have managed to use successfully and even The Newest Britney Spears album uses very well ( an album with Ke$ha written all over it by the way ) . My guess is that The Lady Gaga executives said “lets go in this direction – this is the trend”. It bears no real personal connection to the artist that is Lady Gaga and it leaves everyone wondering “what happened?” . The song are not even designed to be played easily by DJs – they all have this long speaking type intro and then jump right into some meaningless dance beat.

The fact will never change that what people are looking for is a story , big or small , that allows for the audience to connect with the artist on some level. This is true of any art form. All the marketing in the world will never change that. Marketing is not art.
